Human-Machine Learning: Not Just an Abstract Notion

Imagine an operating room where a computer records every movement a surgeon makes and even gives warnings or suggests possible next steps. This is in the future, says Sanjeev Khudanpur, Ph.D., an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Whiting School, who is now working with other engineers and doctors to use computers to improve how medical students learn surgical procedures. This process draws on the different strengths of human and machines, and this kind of human-machine learning is just one aspect of the Science of Learning that will allow us to perform even higher level processes.
